In the original game it took all of about two pratfalls from height and the subsequent sight of the grinning, begoggled ottsel gloating over your still chilling corpse, making you despise the bugger.
Oh daxter is good real good, and actually funny too.
The action kicks off as Jak is thrown in prison at the start of Jak 2. A stroke of genius in its own right as it means that the developers have used the strongest game of the series as a creative launch pad. Things then take a weird twist, as the ginger one decides the best way he can spring his mate from prison is to get a job as a bug hunter. Regardless of datxter's self interest and surprising motives to get the plot rolling, love still comes quickly as, about two levels in, you suddenly realise this is the best platformer on psp bar none. So what is it that boosts daxter way above the non-existent competition? Well, it’s the fact this looks and plays like Jak 2, which is a bit weird really when paying.
The world of Haven City is also the same futuristic cityscape of Jak 2, complete with traffic jams of flying cars, and airlocks that lead to spacious mission levels. Enter any of these and you will find yourself transported to multi themed colourful worlds packed with stuff to bounce off. The only disappointment comes from that you start to admit to your self this is never going to be as big as its older brother. But who cares its portable. Daxter plays so smoothly, you forget you using a handheld. So when you do you do realise the action is linear and that the levels aren’t going to be as populated, you cant help but feel your respect for the game becoming sadness.
With that out of the way, whether its sliding down pipes, dishing out healthy green eco like a crop duster or scaling down the walls , Daxter still delivers on all fronts with equal confidence. Even the infuriating bemani minigames make a return, and wile they do slow the pace of the game down, the variety they add to proceedings is more than welcome.
One big departure for the series is the collection of battle bugs this minigame, unlike the more familiar combat racing, revolves around the location of insects and potions within the story mode. Collect enough of these critters and you can vary your battle tactics in the semi-digimon turn base combat. Set the right type of creature against an enemy, tailor you upgrades cairfully and you will soon have a cockroach tough bug with pincers like wheel clamp. You could easily dismiss this as just another gimmick but take it into context of the wireless battle arena and I’m talking attention to detail that stretches to all elements of daxter’s gameplay.
In fact, if there was just one reason to convince you that this is a must have psp title, it be daxters ability to keep on giving on so many levels. I really shouldn’t be surprised, though, as its something just about every title in the series has done previously. But here it becomes one of those wonderful and equally frightening guzzles of time. What do you mean I haven’t played on my ps2 for a week.
Its kind of an all out environment that only the best game muster up, and daxter is one of those. Do your self and your psp a favour GET IT. Exclamation
